To a writer this is blasphemy. The power of words is staggering, able to split the heart and soul. Able to move nations to greatness and smash empires into nothing. They can forge friendships between enemies, and betray the trust given by our dearest friends. Words, written or spoken, are a fierce fire that can consume all or a life-giving rain that restores. Fools may try to challenge this truth, but only to their undoing.
The Holy Word of God has this to say regarding the power of words:
“But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”” (Matthew 12:36-37 NASB)
“Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians 4:29 NASB)
“There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, But the tongue of the wise brings healing.” (Proverbs 12:18 NASB)
There is wisdom in these verses, which hopefully cause us to stop and consider our emotional and mental state before speaking/texting/tweeting words that we can never take back.
